Scotia Speedworld Closes 30th Anniversary Season Saturday in Truro

(Halifax, NS - October 26th, 2017) - The stock car racing season at Scotia Speedworld will officially receive the checkered flag on Saturday evening. The 2017 Scotia Speedworld Awards Banquet will honor the achievements of six dozen racing drivers and teams for their accomplishments in the 30th Anniversary Season of Racing at the 3/10-mile oval. The event will be held at the Best Western Plus Glengarry in Truro, Nova Scotia with the Banquet officially getting underway at 7:00pm.

Champions in eight stock car classes will be crowned on Saturday evening with Matt Vaughan (Bedford) receiving the biggest honor. Vaughan drove his No. 08 Aerotec Engines Chevrolet to the Affordable Fuels Sportsman championship in his rookie season. Vaughan will receive the Roma Brothers Trophy as the champion of the premier division in the CARSTAR Weekly Racing Series and the Debbie Hallahan Memorial Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie of the Year Award as the top freshman in the class.

Jordan Veinotte (Porters Lake) will accept second place honors for a second consecutive season while Travis Roma (West Chezzetcook) was third in the season long point battle.

The most intense point battle across the CARSTAR Weekly Racing Series was in the Strictly Hydraulics Legends division. Reigning Eastern Canadian Masters champion Paul Goulden (Shelburne) was consistent throughout the season and did what he had to do on Finale Friday to edge out Danny Harvey (Lantz) and Adam Meehan (Rawdon Gold Mines) for the championship. Goulden had five podium feature finishes and seven top five feature finishes in 11 races to win his first Scotia Speedworld track championship.

Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) cruised home to a third championship in the last seven years in the Toursec Thunder division. While each race was close, Matthews kept the No. 99 “Mystery Machine” near the front all season. Matthews finished no worse than fifth in a main feature all season long and had seven podium finishes and two feature wins over the 11 race season. Veteran Chris Hatcher (Beaver Bank) fell 20 points short of his first championship in the four cylinder Honda class.

The see-saw battle back and forth at the end of the Toursec Lightning season led to Scott Thibodeau (Williamswood) coming home with his first track championship. Thibodeau posted five feature wins over 14 races, including a sweep of the Toursec Twin 50s. “Rational” Richard Drake (Halifax) kept Thibodeau honest but his five feature win season would fall two points short of Thibodeau’s.

The Langille brothers are champions once more in the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero division, while Brooke Dowe of Bedford pocketed the Beginner Bandolero championship in 2017.

Josh Langille (Coldbrook) drove through the smoke on the final race of the year to capture the 2017 Hydraulics Plus Bandolero Outlaw track championship by a mere three points over reigning champion Sam Rogers (Lower Onslow). His brother Nathan Langille (Coldbrook) went for a wild ride on the final night of racing but had enough of a gap to hold off Owen Mahar (Hubley) and Colton Noble (Upper Nine Mile River) for the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero Bandit championship for the second consecutive year.

Dowe was in control of the Hydraulics Plus Beginner Bandit division for most of the year. Dowe became the first female Bandolero champion in track history along with becoming one of the youngest champions in Scotia Speedworld’s 30 years.

The Pulse Heavy Duty Truck champion Dan Smith (Lower Sackville) will also be honored at the Awards Banquet on Saturday evening. Smith dueled it out all season with fan favorite Megan Parrott (Beaver Bank) for his sixth championship in the class.

The Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie of the Year Award Winners will be honored Saturday. Alongside Vaughan, recipients in their respective divisions include Andrew Lively (Middle Sackville, Strictly Hydraulics Legends), Neil Miousse (Kentville, Toursec Thunder), Travis Keefe (Clayton Park, Toursec Lightning), Tanner MacLean (Scotsburn, Hydraulics Plus Bandolero Outlaw) and Dawson Noble (Upper Nine Mile River, Hydraulics Plus Beginner Bandolero). There was no eligible recipient in the Pulse Heavy Duty Truck division.

Various vendor draws and contingency awards will also be handed out as a part of the awards ceremony. All drivers who competed in 80% or more of the completed races within their CARSTAR Weekly Racing Series division will be honoured on Saturday night.

The evening gets started with doors opening at 6pm, followed by dinner at 7pm. The awards portion of the show is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm and will be followed by a dance featuring DJ Chad White.
