July 25th: Shriner's Classic Night

DARTMOUTH DODGE SPORTSMAN
Jeff Dillman, a former two-time Dartmouth Dodge Sportsman Series track champion, has scaled back his racing operations in the last two seasons. Dillman, of Middle Musquodoboit, marks select shows on his calendar with one goal in mind every time the rubber of his #08 Absolute Traffic Services Chevrolet hits the track – to win.

Dillman did just that Friday night, winning his record breaking fourth Shriner’s Classic in the historic 20th running of the event. The win is Dillman’s fourth triumph in the event in the last six years.

Dillman won the first heat, which gave him the pole position for the 50-lap event. Dillman put it on cruise control for the first half before “the cream of the crop” in the point standings rose to the top with Darren Wallage (Oakfield), Aaron Boutilier (Porter’s Lake) and Harry Ross White (Noel Road) found themselves in the top five at the midway point of the feature.

While Wallage could keep on the outside of Dillman, it was only for a handful of laps. Even with the late race restarts in the race, Wallage could only wrestle the lead away from Dillman for one lap and it was the #08 who held the advantage on the final restart with a few laps remaining to solidify the win.

The second position belonged to Wallage with third going to Boutilier. DJ Casey (Prospect Road) followed up his first career feature win with a fourth place finish in one of the biggest races of the year.

Fifth place slid across the line sideways as Jordan Veinotte (Porter’s Lake) took the spot over a determined Chris Dingle (Elmsdale).

Heat races in the 22-car field went to Dillman, Casey, and Fred Schofield.


HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLEROS
It took five years, but Kennetcook’s Luke Ettinger has finally scored that elusive first victory in the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero division.

Ettinger had to earn the victory by holding off a hard charging Adam Meehan (Rawdon) in the closely competitive field. Braden Langille (Shubenacadie) rebounded for a third place run following a trip to the rear of the field after contact with another driver around the halfway point in the 15-lap affair. Cole Tanner (Shubenacadie) was fourth, besting sophomore Wyatt McCulloch (Stewiacke) for the spot.

Nathan Blackburn (Timberlea) worked hard to capture his heat race, while Ettinger completed the double down by winning the high-handicap qualifier.


STRICTLY HYDRAULICS LEGENDS
Friday night was yet another Cole Butcher show.

The youngster from Porter’s Lake cut through the Strictly Hydraulics Legends field like a hot knife through butter and held off all challengers on a pair of late race restarts to capture another feature victory in the class.

Butcher had to hold off Jeff Cruickshank (Hantsport) for the win while Danny Harvey (Lantz) put on a late race charge to take third and was looking for more at the checkered flag. Jeff Atkinson (Port LaTour) and Dylan Blenkhorn (Truro), who made his first start in the Braden Langille Motorsports #51 car, completed the top five.

Qualifying heat races were won by Scott Cunning (Halifax) and Cruickshank.


LIGHTNING
Deven Smith (Lakeside) became the second multi-time winner in the Lightning class on Friday evening.

Smith held court over the competitive field of four cylinder race cars and edged out fellow feature winner Scott Thibodeau (Williamswood) and Richie Moore (Elmsdale), who overcame fuel pump issues with his race car in recent weeks to return to the podium on Friday. Darrell Sullivan (Harrietsfield) continues to improve in his first full time season by taking fourth over a strong #118 car with Mike Brown (Urbania) at the helm.

Another massive 22-car field showed up to compete Friday night, with Garth Bezanson (Elmsdale), Donovan Gaudet (Elmsdale) and Brown taking heat wins.


COORS LIGHT TRUCKS
Jason Fenton (Eastern Passage) may be the only driver completely happy with the way the Coors Light Truck feature went Friday night.

Why? Because he won it.

Fenton won the heat and feature Friday night at Scotia Speedworld. Behind Fenton, the field resembled more of a rolling demolition than a stock car event.

The field pushed and shoved each other to try and gain spots, all behind Fenton, who drove his number 33 Chevrolet to the win. Second place belonged to Cory Leonard (Goodwood), who edged out fellow rookie Matt Vaughan (Lake Fletcher) for the spot.

The two-time champion Smith rallied to take fourth with Jim MacMillan (Halifax), who was subbing in for Chris Smith in the #77, finished fifth.
