September 14th: Finale Friday By Classic Freight Transport
AFFORDABLE FUELS SPORTSMAN
Finally, Jordan Veinotte (Porter’s Lake) is a Sportsman champion at Scotia Speedworld.
After being a bridesmaid for a number of years, Veinotte locked up the championship with an eighth place finish on Finale Friday presented by Classic Freight. Following the heat, all Veinotte needed in the final feature of the year was a tenth place finish or better to clinch his title.
The final feature of the season was won by Travis Roma (West Chezzetcook). Roma battled with Pete Miller (Kennetcook) for the final checkered flag of the year with Roma taking the advantage on the final restart with 11 laps remaining. Miller settled for second with Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie of the Year Deven Smith (Lakeside) in third. Reigning champion Matt Vaughan (Bedford) ended his Affordable Fuels Sportsman title run with a fourth place finish on Classic Freight Night, followed by Wayne Miller (Kennetcook) in fifth.
Twenty-three drivers made their way to Scotia Speedworld to compete in the final Sportsman feature of 2018. Roma, Pete Miller and Richard Salter (Centre Burlington) took home heat victories. It was the first Scotia Speedworld start of the season for Brady Creamer (Miramichi), Tony Leonard (Goodwood) and Steve MacPhee (Yarmouth), who took home sixth, tenth and fourteenth in the feature, respectively.
Aaron Boutilier (Porter’s Lake) finished fourth in the standings to take home the Fleet Brake Atlantic Consistency Award. Boutilier finished 30 points ahead of Alex Johnson (Enfield) to take home the award.
STRICTLY HYDRAULICS LEGENDS
Paul Goulden’s (Shelburne) consistency throughout the 2018 season rewarded the No. 57 team with a second straight Strictly Hydraulics Legends championship.
Emily Meehan (Rawdon) entered the feature with a nine point lead after Goulden failed to finish the high handicap heat race. Even with Goulden’s trouble, he would still roll off eighth in the feature with Meehan at the tail due to her four feature wins over 2018.
The championship would be defined by a caution flag at the halfway mark of the feature. Meehan was making her way to the front of the field when she spun into the infield in Turn One as she battled with Tylor Hawes (Porter’s Lake) for eighth. As they ran, Meehan would have needed two more spots as Goulden ran third but found herself at the rear for bringing out the yellow with 12 to go.
Determined, Meehan came back through the field but was only able to muster eighth place. Goulden, who gained another spot to second, was able to escape with the championship by three points.
At the front, Wyatt McCulloch (Stewiacke) was able to put a season littered with motor issues behind him to score his first Legend car victory of 2018. McCulloch raced to the feature win over Goulden, Cory Hall (Jolicure, NB), Andrew Lively (Middle Sackville) and Craig MacDonald (Waverley).
McCulloch and Lively scored heat race victories in the 17 car field.
Nicole Richard (Belnan) took home the Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie of the Year Award, while Goulden will receive the Fleet Brake Atlantic Consistency Award as he did not win a single feature in his championship season.
TOURSEC THUNDER
Even the best line of defense could not keep Darren Flemming (Belnan) from winning his first Toursec Thunder championship.
Flemming raced to a fourth place finish in one of the wildest Thunder feature finishes seen in a while to win the championship by two points over Jesse Deveau (Greenwood). Deveau, who struggled with the handling of his No. 51 Greenwood Auto Sales Honda, entered the final night with a six point lead but was shrunk to two after Flemming took home the heat race win.
Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) led early but drove out of his rear view mirror for most of the race, keeping Flemming behind him. Matthews was determined and as the race went on, a two car battle for the lead became a four car and then a six car fight as the faster cars lined up behind Matthews waiting for the cork to be popped on the lead.
When the dust settled, Neil Miousse (Kentville) drove to victory lane for his second win of 2018 and first since CTV Night in May. Miousse raced to win in front of two drivers who searched for their first feature win of 2018 in Brad Hayes (Head of Jeddore) and Nic Baker (Middle Sackville). Matthews was able to hold Flemming back to fifth before the No. 22 took the high line around “the Mystery Machine.” Flemming finished fourth at the end of 25 laps with Matthews fifth.
“The Ironman” Drew MacEachern (Dartmouth), who says his streak will end at 15 years after 2018, took home the Fleet Brake Atlantic Consistency Award with a fourth place point finish.
TOURSEC LIGHTNING
Steve Matthews (Bedford) drove to his first Toursec Lightning championship Friday night at Scotia Speedworld, but it was not without a little hiccup in the late stages.
As the field worked to complete the 25-lap feature, Matthews bobbled and slowed momentarily in Turn Two.
“I thought it was all over,” said Matthews following the race. “I had another right rear tire give up on me. All we could do is hold on as best we could, and we brought it home.”
Matthews held on to a fourth place feature finish as Tim Hortons at the Airport rookie Matthew Barhouse (Dartmouth) drove to a second feature victory. Barkhouse had Garth Bezanson (Oldham), driving for Greg Snelgrove, filling up his rear view mirror but held on for the victory on Finale Friday.
Following post race technical inspection, Bezanson would not pass and would be relegated to the rear of the results for both his heat and the feature. It would promote Mike Jollimore (Halifax) to a season best second place run and Matthews onto the podium in third. Scott Thibodeau (Williamswood), who challenged Matthews late, was fourth following tech while Travis Keefe (Gold River) completed his sophomore season with a fifth place feature effort.
Tom Stewart (Greenwood) and Barkhouse won qualifying heat races in the 15 car field.
Stewart was poised for his best feature run of the year before a flat tire ended his run seven laps from the finish.
Paige Drake (Halifax) raced to the Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie of the Year Award while Chevy MacDonald (Stewiacke) finished the season with the Fleet Brake Atlantic Consistency Award after tying for fourth in the standings with Marshall Bezanson (Oldham).
HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLEROS
While Gage Gilby (Enfield) and Owen Mahar (Hubley) had the Beginner and Bandit championships wrapped up before heading into Hydraulics Plus Bandolero competition, Colton Noble (Upper Nine Mile River) raced to a second place Outlaw finish to clinch his first championship at Scotia Speedworld.
It wasn’t without an early race scare as a multiple car incident in Turn One on the second lap of race swept up Noble. Noble was able to pull away and being to methodically make his way to the front. As it has been most of the season, Noble battled with Sam Rogers (Lower Onslow) and Danny Chisholm (Canning) for the victory with Rogers coming out on top over Noble and Chisholm, who closed the gap by winning the heat race.
Mahar, who won his heat race and the Bandit championship, finished fourth overall with Devin Wadden (Bedford) racing to fifth in his first full time Bandolero season.
Brooke Dowe (Bedford) finished second in the final Bandit feature of the year to bring home the Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie of the Year Award in the division.
Gilby drove to his eighth Beginner Bandolero win of the season but it was far from easy. It appeared as it would be Chase MacKay’s night as the Bear Cove driver showed the way during the first half before Gilby took the advantage of an early caution and would race to the lead. MacKay would spin late but drove back from seventh in the waning laps to finish third behind Gilby and Campbell Delaney (Halifax). Ayden Christensen (Windsor Junction) was fourth with Cam Mosher (Bear Cove) scoring one of the best finishes of his season with a fifth place run.
Gilby won the heat race for the Hydraulics Plus Beginner Bandoleros.
