TOURSEC THUNDER
Jesse Deveau (Greenwood) put a tough Toursec 50 behind him in fine fashion by taking home a fast paced Toursec Thunder feature during FanFest.
Deveau, who fell a lap down early and had to rally to fourth one week prior, stepped out early and never looked back en route to his first feature win of the season. Almost a half straightaway behind, it was Taylor McLean (New Glasgow) who was one of the big stories of the night. McLean drove to his first Scotia Speedworld podium finish during Friday night’s action. Neil Miousse (Kentville) held off a determined Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) for the final podium spot. Miousse had to hold off Deveau in a close finish last week and held off the three-time Thunder champion this week for his second straight third place finish.
Darren Flemming (Shubenacadie) took home fifth place, a far cry from the four straight wins (two heats and two features) he had amassed to begin the 2019 season. With the strong start though, Flemming continues to lead the points after three events on the season.
TOURSEC LIGHTNING
“Rational” Richard Drake (Halifax) showed a veteran’s patience and speed throughout Friday’s 25-lap Toursec Lightning feature to take his third triumph of the year.
“Rational” Richard took the lead from “Big Daddy” Kenny Hopper after Hopper lost a wheel in Turn Two at the halfway point in the feature. Richard pressured Hopper on numerous laps as the No. 107 led the field for ten laps prior to the centre of the rim letting go on his car.
After looking to the inside on a handful of laps, Drake’s patience paid off as he took the lead on the next restart and was able to hold off Toursec 50 winner Matthew Barkhouse (Dartmouth) for the win. It was a mad scramble for third late in the feature as David Jollimore (Halifax) would take the spot after having to dodge an incident featuring his teammate Mike Jollimore (Halifax) and Chevy MacDonald (Stewiacke). Travis Keefe (Timberlea) showed consistent speed and would bring his car home fourth, followed by Bruce Larter (Halifax), who scored a career best fifth place run at FanFest.
HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLEROS
BEGINNERS
After coming close on several occasions, Campbell Delaney is finally a winner at Scotia Speedworld in the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero division.
The third year beginner was able to use track position and a quick No. 9 car to drive to victory lane on Friday night to kick off FanFest. Delaney held off another third year beginner in Caden Tufts (Timberlea) for the win late in the race which featured a final restart with only a handful of laps remaining. Emily Chisholm (Antigonish) was able to outduel two time feature winner Miles MacKenzie (Porters Lake) for the final podium spot on the night. Emma MacMillan (Noel), who led laps early, brought her car home in fifth.
BANDITS
Gage Gilby (Enfield) is on pace to match the mark he set on wins one season ago, taking his third feature victory in four races in his No. 25 Bandolero. Gilby started scratch in the 15-lap feature due to his multiple wins on the season and was in the lead by the halfway point in the feature. Gilby raced to the checkered flag ahead of Dawson Noble (Upper Nine Mile River) and Chase MacKay (Bear Cove). Ayden Christensen (Windsor Junction) dug deep in the final laps to best Brooke Dowe (Bedford) for fourth at the finish of the race.
OUTLAWS
For a fourth straight race, there is a new Hydraulics Plus Bandolero Outlaw feature winner.
Owen Mahar (Hubley) was a master of the restart on Friday night during FanFest, having firm control at every green flag drop. Mahar raced to his first win of 2019 at Scotia Speedworld ahead of Sam Rogers (Lower Onslow) and Nate Singer (Kennetcook), who kept the No. 66 Maritime Fuels Bandolero honest up front. Rogers was pinch hitting for Nathan Langille (Coldbrook), who was away on a school trip. Singer crossed the line third but failed post race technical inspection, handing third to Austin Tanner (Shubenacadie), who scored his first podium finish of the year. Danny Chisholm (Canning) and Dylan MacMillan (Noel) completed the top five.
Leading into the race, the Outlaws had run the previous two features caution free. Several cautions slowed the event and took their toll on front running cars. Point leader Colton Noble (Upper Nine Mile River), Jordan Rushton (Dartmouth) and Dylan Dowe (Bedford) all failed to finish Friday’s feature due to crash damage.
STRICTLY HYDRAULICS LEGENDS
After a couple features that were a bit rough around the edges for the Strictly Hydraulics Legend division, the fans enjoyed a clean 25-lap feature led to the end by Braden Langille (Shubenacadie). Langille became the first two-time winner on the Strictly Hydraulics Legends results for 2019 after building a lead early and maintaining the advantage in the No. 51 Velocity Machining and Welding/AK Performance Legend.
Craig MacDonald (Waverley) was the only non-FZ09 on the podium, finishing in second in his first Friday night start of 2019. Emily Meehan (Rawdon) settled for third, her third straight podium of the Strictly Hydraulics Legends season. Paul Goulden (Shelburne) brought home a strong fourth place finish with Andrew Lively (Middle Sackville) rallying from a trip over the Turn Three bank on the opening lap to finish fifth.
SPORTSMAN
Deven Smith (Lakeside) drove to his first Sportsman win of the season at Scotia Speedworld in dominant fashion Friday night during Fanfest. Smith had built a comfortable lead early and even with two cautions within ten laps remaining in the event had a firm grip on the top spot to the finish of the 38-lap feature.
Jordan Veinotte (Porters Lake), who celebrated his 30th birthday on Friday evening, finished second with Matt Vaughan (Bedford) in third. Vaughan was methodical in his run to the podium, working his way through the field and capitalized on late race restarts to reach the podium at the finish. Darren Hilchie (Lake Charlotte) had his best career Sportsman run to date with a fourth place effort, followed by Richard Salter (Burlington), who completed the top five.
The race featured some late race excitement as Pete Miller (Kennetcook), Brentley Pirri (Three Fathom Harbour) and Megan Parrott (Beaver Bank) all found themselves going to the rear of the field within the final ten laps due to their roles in no fault cautions.
Four points separate the top three in the Sportsman points heading into Friday’s racing action.
