The Scotia Speedworld racing season on kicked off on Friday, August 21st. Four months and four days later than scheduled.

It also looked a little different at the track. Grandstands were closed due to Covid-19. Drivers, crews and staff were wearing face masks. Pit parking spread out to allow safe distancing between trailers.

There were shiney cars in the pits, some new driving suits and under the face masks, smiles on the faces of the teams. The best part was that no one forgot how to drive. In fact, the racing was great, one of the best opening days in memory.

In the Sportsman division Matt Vaughan 08 and Devon Smith 94 raced most of the 38-lap feature side by side or nose to tail. It was a high-speed game of chess, as the two drivers tried to pull away from each other. All the while extending their lead over the pack. Alex Johnson 14 worked his way by cars to secure third place and tried to reel in Vaughan and Smith. When Rob Bowness threw the checkered flag, it was Vaughan ahead of Smith, followed by Johnson. Vaughan took the Heat race victory for a perfect day.

The Strictly Hydraulics Legend division hit the track with speed. Braden Langille 51 was in mid-season form. He drove to the win, working through the field. Everyone was trying to grab a position and protect their position as well. Devin Wadden 20, a rookie last year, drove his car to a second-place finish. Andrew Lively 15 was chasing Wadden hard in his familiar green machine and finished third. Heat race winners were Braden Langille 51 and the 03.

The TOURSEC Thunder and Lightning cars ran their own Heats and combined for the Feature. With bragging rights on the line, the drivers ran hard, resulting in great battles all through the field. The top five cars were challenging each other for positions on every lap. In the end it was Andrew Warren 31 holding off Tanner McLean 18 and Dave Matthews 99. Jamie Dillman 158 and Richard Drake 141 had strong runs finishing 4th and 5th. Heat wins went to Warren and McLean.

The Bandolero division had the more experienced Bandit and Outlaw drivers competing together. The newer drivers competed in the Beginner Bandolero class.

Chase Livingston 39 took his car through the field to the point and swapped the lead with Daniel Vandenburg 97 throughout the feature. In the end, Livingston took the checkered flag with Vandenburg hot on his heels. Sam MacDonald 14 finished third. Heat race went to Vandenberg.

In the combined Bandit and Outlaw Bandolero race Gage Gilby 25 pulled away for the win. Chasing Gilby and finishing second was Nathan Langille 3, while holding off Tanton Wooldridge 0. Heat race was won by Nathan Langille 3.

All in all, a good night. Cars back at Scotia for the first time in 2020. Next event is Friday, August 28, 2020 when the Green flag will fall at 7:00 p.m.
