ROMA’S CANCER IN REMISSION, HOPES FOR FULL TIME SEASON IN 2011

Former Scotia Speedworld Sportsman and Street Stock Champion Terry Roma has led many laps and has won many races in his storied racing career. Just over a year ago, Roma entered into the battle for his life with cancer being his rival. Late this week the West Chezzetcook driver got the news that he, his family, friends and fans had all been hoping for – the cancer has gone into remission.

The word from the doctors has Roma elated. “Being in remission is like winning the battle to me,” the ’08 Sportsman titlist said Friday night. “There are still some other issues to deal with; along with one more surgery but this news is something we’ve been waiting to hear for a long time.”

Roma competed on a part-time basis in 2010 while taking chemotherapy treatments throughout the season. During that time, he recorded five top ten finishes, three top five finishes and two podium appearances – including a second place run in the 16th Annual Shriner’s Classic as he and Colby Smith battled to one of the best finishes of the year. Most of the races late in the season were run with a bottle of chemotherapy medication taped to his arm, but Roma always had a smile on his face.

The goal for the team, led by Terry and his brother Lockie, was to finish the season with the car in one piece. They succeeded in that goal and the pilot of the #38 Doug Forbes Century 21 Classic Grand Prix looks forward to competing on a full-time basis in 2011. “It will feel great to be back full-time as long as everything goes good on my end,” commented Roma. “I’m still quite sore from my other surgeries, but I’m still planning on being behind the wheel this season. I’m looking forward to making laps again with all of my racing buddies and seeing all my fans and the fans who support each and every driver and team out there. Without their love and dedication to the sport, we as drivers wouldn’t have a place to play.”

The 2011 season is scheduled to kick off in just three months and the Sportsman class is expected to be one of the most competitive in series history. With young guns like ’10 champ Colby Smith, Russell Smith Jr. and Mike Alexander aiming to give veterans such as Jeff Dillman, Tony Leonard, Aaron Boutilier and Harry Ross White a run for their money. When you add Roma to the mix it creates one of the best upcoming summers we’ve seen in a long while and you’ll have the chance to see it unfold in May at Scotia Speedworld!
